Area Hospital Settles Medicare Fraud Allegations

Des Peres Hospital is to pay a 900-thousand-dollar penalty to settle allegations of submitting false claims to Medicare.  According to the Justice Department, the hospital allegedly billed Medicare for patients having surgery for spinal fractures, often caused by osteoporosis, on an inpatient basis when the minimally invasive procedure can be done on an outpatient basis.  Mercy Hospital St. Louis in Creve Coeur paid 365-thousand-dollars to the government last year, to settle similar allegations.
